MysteryofthemissingHangingGardensofBabylonsolved?ExpertclaimstohavefoundtheelusivewonderoftheworldAccordingtoancienttexts,theHangingGardensofBabylonboastedelaborateterraces,magnificentwaterfeaturesandfloatingplants.ThedecadentgroundsarereputedtohavebeenbuiltintheBabylonprovinceofIraq-yetforcenturiesno-onehasbeenabletofindanyphysicalevidencetheyexisted.However,accordingtooneexpert,closeranalysisofthesetexts-alongwithcluesondisplayattheBritishMuseum-suggestthatthismaybebecausearchaeologistshavebeensearchinginthewrongplace.AccordingtoDrStephanieDalleyfromOxfordUniversity,thegardensareactuallyburiedintheancientcityofNineveh,nearmodern-dayMosul,350milesawayinnorthernIraq.DrDalleyfromtheuniversity’sOrientalInstitutehasspentthepast20yearsresearchingthelocationofthegardens,referredtobysomeasamythduetothelackofphysicalevidence.Theywerebelievedtohavebeenbuiltaround600BC,althoughthisdatewastakenfromancienttextswrittenhundredsofyearsaftertheyweresaidtohavebeencreated.OnetextspecificallyclaimedthegardenswerebuiltbyBabylonianEmperorNebuchadnezzarintheBabylonprovinceofIraqforhiswifeAmyitis.YettherewasnomentionoftheminanytextwrittenbytheEmperororhiswife.ThisledDrDalleytostudythesetextsmorecloselyandduringherresearchshediscoveredaprismattheBritishMuseuminLondoncoveredincuneiformwriting.CuneiformisanancientlanguagedatingbacktotheBabylonianera,thatwasalsousedbytheAssyrianempires.TheprismcontainsdetailsofakingcalledSennacheribwhowasleaderoftheAssyrianempireandlivedacenturybeforeNebuchadnezzar.ThewritingincludedreferencestoapalacebuiltneartheAssyriancapitalofNinevehaswellasagardenhecalled‘wonderforallpeople.’Sennacherib’sgrandsonAssurbanipalwasalsosaidtohavedrawnanimageofthegardenonapanelinthispalace.
