Since the 5th or 6th century in the period of Southern-and-Northern Dynasty，the peony is treated as an ornamental(装饰的) plant and painted in Chinese paintings. It begins to be grown in the Sui Dynasty. It is popular in the Tang Dynasty. Their flower were known as “the finest of their kind” in the Song Dynasty.
