SummaryDuring its long term historical development and artificial selection, Chinese mudan has formed three larger cultivars groups (CGs): Zhongyuan CG from the Central Plains of China; Northwest CG from North-Western China; and Jiangnan CG from the lower reaches of the Yangtze River of China. There are also some smaller CGs, including Pengzhou of Sichuan Province, Yan'an of Shaanxi Province and Baokang of Hubai Province. Each CG has formed in 3 ways: (1) direct domestication and improvement of the wild species; (2) domestication and cross-breeding of cultivars introduced from other parts of the country; and (3) a combination of (1) and (2). Most of the CGs have developed by the third method. Wild species related closely to the cultivated mudan have been identified. They are dwarf mudan (Paeonia suffruticosa var. spontanea, syn. P. spontanea), Yangshan mudan (P. ostii) and purple-blotched mudan (P. rockii). The relationships between wild mudan and mudan cultivated in China and abroad are summarized.
