Part 1

It is entering the world of handmade wood carving, as if through time, back to ancient China. This art carries a thousand years of tradition, brings together the wisdom and creativity of the craftsman, and portrays the essence of beauty.

木雕是雕塑的一种，在我们国家常常被称为“民间工艺”。木雕可以分为立体圆雕、根雕、浮雕三大类。木雕是从木工中分离出来的一个工种，在我们国家的工种分类中为“精细木工”。

Wood carving is a kind of sculpture, often called a "folk craft" in our country. Wood carving can be divided into three categories: three-dimensional round carving, root carving and relief carving. Wood carving is a kind of work separated from woodworking, and it is called "fine woodworking" in our national classification of work.

雕刻是木雕的核心环节，匠人运用各种雕刻工具，如刀、凿、榫卯等，耐心地雕刻每一寸木头。

Carving is the core link of wood carving. Craftsmen use various carving tools, such as knives, chisels, mortise and tenon joints, to patiently carve every inch of wood.

无论是人物、花鸟、山水，每一个细节都需要匠人的巧手和细心。这个过程需要长时间的练习和经验积累，因为任何疏忽都可能导致整个作品的失败。

Whether it is figures, flowers birds, or landscapes, every detail needs the craftsman's skilful hand and care. This process requires a long time of practice and accumulation of experience, as any negligence can lead to the failure of the entire work.

唐代是中国工艺技术大放光彩的时期，木雕工艺也日趋完美。许多保存至今的木雕佛像，是中国古代艺术品中的杰作，具有造型凝练、刀法熟练流畅、线条清晰明快的工艺特点。

The Tang Dynasty was a time when Chinese craft technology was in full bloom, and wood carving technology was becoming more and more perfect. Many wooden Buddha statues preserved today are masterpieces of ancient Chinese art, with the characteristics of concise shape, skilled and smooth knife, and clear and crisp lines.

明清时代的木雕品题材，多见为生活风俗、神话故事，诸如吉庆有余、五谷丰登、龙凤呈祥、平安如意、松鹤延年等木雕作品，深受当时社会欢迎。

The themes of wood carvings in the Ming and Qing dynasties are mostly life customs and fairy tales, such as auspicious celebrations, good harvests, auspicious dragons and phoenixes, peace and happiness, pine cranes and other wood carvings, which were welcomed by the society at that time.
