"Swan Lake," originally titled "Lebedinoye Ozero" in Russian, is a timeless ballet composed by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky in 1875–1876. It is a four-act masterpiece. The libretto, based on Russian and German folk tales, tells the tragic love story between Prince Siegfried and the dual characters Princess Odette/Odile, who is cursed to live as a swan by day and a woman at night.
The ballet begins with Prince Siegfried discovering the enchanted Swan Lake and encountering the white swan princess, Odette. Under the spell of the sorcerer Rothbart, Odette can only assume human form at night. Siegfried pledges his love to her and vows to break the curse. Unaware of the trickery, Siegfried declares his love for Odile, inadvertently sealing Odette's fate. Realizing his mistake, Siegfried rushes back to the lake, seeking redemption. The ballet culminates with a dramatic confrontation between Siegfried, Odette, and Rothbart, often ending with a heroic attempt to break the curse, sometimes tragically, sometimes romantically resolved depending on the version.
